It all started with a snow cone and a dream…..or something like that.
In 1991, founder Al Davis “Big Al” bought his first concession stand. He traveled to parking lots, town festivals, and events selling popcorn, snow cones, candy apples, and more fun foods. He, with his wife Beth, expanded to a few more concession stands over the years and we still have the original concession stand today.
In the fall of 1992, while at a town festival, he was approached by another vendor wanting to sell a bounce house and clown striker carnival game….and the rest well…..is history!
He purchased them and started Davis Amusements, doing mostly backyard birthday parties and festivals around upstate SC and Western NC with the slogan “We Deliver Fun!"
By 1995, his son, Matt was only 8 years old but already working in the business popping popcorn, counting change, and helping in the concession stands. Al's mother, Beatrice, would also occasionally help run the stands and would often tell people that Matt “has been working around this business and helping customers since he could see over the counter.” Sarah, Al and Beth’s daughter was also born this year.
By 2005, the company had expanded into obstacle courses, interactive inflatables, slides, and over 100 different inflatable and carnival game options for all types of event rentals, and The Fun Farm was opened. The Fun Farm was one of the first family entertainment centers in the area and provided a place for families to have private birthday parties indoors for over 10 years.
In 2009 Matt married his wife, Casey, and in 2010, he bought into the company with his first 5 inflatables and started working “full time” while also working as a full-time firefighter. Around this time, Matt wanted to take the company to the next level with the boom of internet, websites, and this new thing that was becoming popular called “the smart phone”. Being named Matt, always wearing a hat, and a love for Disney...the name Mad Hatter just seemed like the perfect fit for a company name and a new brand and logo was created.
By 2016, Mad Hatter Amusements had expanded into providing carnival ride rentals, inflatable rentals, carnival games, and entertainment options all over SC and NC and even into Georgia doing over 150 school, church, and corporate events this year and become one of the largest fun providers in the Carolinas. During this year, Matt left his career as a firefighter to run the business and also had 2 children of his own (2012 and 2016). The business had expanded so much, that The Fun Farm building had to be turned from a party place into a warehouse to store the over 150 attractions that were now offered.
In 2020 the world stopped in the entertainment business with the introduction of COVID. Nearly every town festival, corporate event, school event, church event were immediately cancelled and the calendar wiped clean for over a year. During this time, instead of closing down or folding like many other companies, we decided to really make sure our inventory was top notch, clean, looked great, and NEW for when events came back.
From 2022 to 2024 Mad Hatter had the biggest growth in our 30+ year company history with the addition of a Ferris Wheel, Carousel, and Pirate ship along with a roller coaster, new concession stand, 2 trackless trains, swing rides, tubs of fun, new Christmas inflatables, and even more for the 2025 season and beyond! Not only did we grow our fleet, but we grew our customers as well and now regularly travel to the coastal areas of SC and NC and cover the entire states of both Carolinas.
This family run business has expanded but we have not lost the small company touch of great customer service, clean and friendly staff, and clean, safe, and nice rides and inflatables. We take pride on making your event look and feel exactly how you want it and take the extra time to make sure that each event is set up for you just like we would our own family. Matt or Al personally quote and handle every single event and every item that we use is company owned and operated to ensure safety and quality. This is the “Mad Hatter Difference” that keeps our events booking at nearly 100% rebook rate year after year!
